Growing Green For The Land Ice
This initiative highlights the connection between local environmental action and the protection of Antarctic land ice. It aligns with ATS goals by:
- Encouraging education and awareness of climate and polar science.
- Recognizing the importance of Antarctic ice in stabilizing global climate systems.
- Inspiring youth engagement in sustainability and scientific understanding related to Antarctica.
By linking local green initiatives to global ice preservation, the program reinforces the ATS commitment to scientific research and international cooperation.
Global warming driven by rising greenhouse gas emissions is accelerating ice melt in Antarctica., actions taken elsewhere such as reforestation play an important role in reducing global warming through carbon sequestration.
The Growing Green for the Land of Ice programme focused on empowering participants to take climate-positive actions, particularly through tree-planting initiatives, as a symbol and practical step towards reducing carbon emissions. By increasing carbon sequestration and promoting environmental stewardship, the programme highlighted how local actions in Malaysia can contribute to global efforts to protect Antarctica, reinforcing the message that safeguarding the continent begins beyond its icy borders.
This programme involved 909 participants, comprising students, university staff, and local NGOs. A total of 1,838 seedlings were planted, including mangrove species, Meranti, Tualang, Ketapang, Garcinia subelliptica (Happiness Tree), and Michelia champaca (Cempaka Tree). The initiative contributed to biodiversity conservation and long-term environmental sustainability.
